OUR DIRECTORS

Amber (she/they) graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in History in 2022. She is passionate about education and democratising access to learning. Since 2019, she's been working in schools on topics of social justice and founded the Collective Futures Project to connect young people and tackle difficult topics with candour and respect. In their spare time, Amber loves the creative arts and performs spoken word at local Manchester venues.

Nelly (she/her) studied Politics and Modern History at the University of Manchester and is currently doing a Social Science Research Masters at the University of Amsterdam. Her work at university is focused on themes of solidarity and the origins of knowledge claims. In 2018 Nelly spent a year working at a Deutsches Theater in Berlin. She has a lot of experience working with children and young adults in theatre projects. Nelly likes to read books about unlikely heroes and is interested in how storytelling affects beliefs.

  • Clara Akingbade

    Clara studies Education at the University of Cambridge and has great interest in understanding the world and the matters affecting society. She recognises and hugely values education’s importance in this and is keen to help those facing limitations. Her advocacy engagement in the Mayor of London’s VRU’s Young People’s Action Group and the Global Partnership for Education & Plan International UK’s Youth Education Council prove testimony to this. Exploring language and culture through immersive experiences like traveling and volunteering are some of Clara’s greatest joy and she is excited to continue exploring education in a range of contexts and from a range of perspectives!

  • Asli Ali

    Asli (She/Her), is a final year Politics and Modern History student at the University of Manchester. She is passionate about cultural history, and especially interested in race relations, social change, and grassroot organising. She is currently a participant on the Greater Manchester Combined Authority civil leadership programme, where she aims to help tackle the under representation of individuals facing racial inequalities in many areas of civic and public life in Manchester. Asli is also the deputy chair of the Feminist Collective at UOM, and in her spare time she enjoys reading, watching films and visiting local exhibitions.

  • Theo Abbott

    Theo (he/him) is a third-year English Literature student at the University of Manchester. Theo is particularly interested in exploring the ways that language and narratives shape our beliefs. He is also the editor of the English Lit Society’s publication, where he aims to facilitate critical discussions about literary representation in both educational curriculums and more broadly. Theo is an avid reader and enjoys a cinema trip any chance he gets.

  • Em Hirst

    Em (she/they) works for CGL, a charity that helps people dealing with substance misuse. They graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in World Literature and are a creative activist for the Manchester Jewish Museum. She loves books and traveling, and climbed Kilimanjaro two years ago so that she doesn't feel like she has to do any form of exercise ever again.

  • Devika Kapoor

    Devika (she/her) studied English Literature at the University of Birmingham. She is an advocate for storytelling and its power to help people make sense of their own experiences. As an avid learner and trainer, she’s passionate about how education can change lives.

  • Costi Levy

    Costi (she/her) is a theatre director and recent Spanish and Philosophy graduate from Oxford University. Outside of her degree, she is a theatre director. She is particularly interested in exploring cultural diversity and social issues through personal stories. Recent productions include The Tempest, reinterpreted ecologically with a focus on cycles of violence, and Hands and Flowers, a queer Jewish comedy. Costi is also passionate about facilitating creative development. She has lead theatre workshops for students aged 12-25, and worked as an English Language Assistant for the British Council during her year abroad.

  • Alex Lowrie

    Alex (he/him) studies Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of Oxford and is particularly passionate about LGBTQ+ advocacy and ending educational inequality. He was a volunteer for Universify Education, which runs summer schools and coaching sessions for disadvantaged students in the aim of increasing access to higher education. He is also the LGBTQ+ rep for his college, aiming to continue creating an environment free from marginalization and stigmatization. He is passionate about social justice but also how the words and concepts we use influence our beliefs, and how these can be shaped through education and open conversation.

  • Nicola Miles

    Nicola (she/her) is currently taking a gap year where she will be starting a teaching career in Thailand. Nicola studied History and Sociology at the University of Manchester where she specialised in post-colonial theories and Black British Caribbean history. In 2021, she led her own research project investigating the first Pan-African movements in the early 20th century. Nicola was active in student media where she engaged in current affairs and brought awareness to social issues through writing for her student newspaper and co-hosting her podcast series.

  • sam schulenberg

    Sam (he/him) studies French and German at the University of Oxford and will be joining our team next September. In 2021, he published an open letter to the headmaster of his alma mater containing 200 testimonies regarding social and sexual misconduct committed by students at the school and has worked with multiple educational reform campaigns. He is an avid reader and fashion fan.

  • sofia vaz

    Sofia (she/her) studies History and Politics at the University of York. Sofia has a particular interest in post-colonial studies focusing on India and Africa and the last impact these have in contemporary politics. At university, she is particularly interested in trying to end food poverty in the local area and has joined the local food bank in order to bridge the gap between the university and local community. Outside of this, Sofia enjoys cooking and reading.

  • Denise Vidal

    Denise ( she/her) is a first year undergraduate of Politics and sociology at the University of Warwick. Denise is passionate about intersectionality, education surrounding sexual violence and social mobility causes. She is a member of the Fair Education Alliance Youth Steering Group where she helps in reforming our education system making it a fairer place regardless of your socio-economic status. She also works within her local council ensuring that the young people in her borough feel empowered to have a say in decision-making. In her spare time, she loves reading a good thriller and binge watching anime.

OUR curriculum leads

Tallulah (they/them) graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Social Sciences (Social Anthropology) in 2022. Tallulah is passionate about LGBTQ+ equality and advocacy, volunteering with Just Like Us to provide in-school educational talks about gender and sexuality to secondary school students. During their final year of university, they successfully initiated and led the development of pronoun-sharing guidelines in their department. Tallulah is also a singer-songwriter and can be spotted playing open mics around Manchester.

TALLULAH GUARD
